What is Mesothelioma?
A tumour of the tissue that lines the lungs, stomach, heart and other organs. Mesothelioma starts in cells of mesothelium(the surface layer of the embryonic mesoderm). A cancerous malignant is a group of cancer cells in the body that can grow inside and destroy nearby surrounded tissue. This cancerous malignant can also spread to other parts of the body.
The mesothelioma is a thin membrane that covers, protect from external shocks and provides the safeguard to most of your internal organs. It is made up of two layers: –
- The inner layer(wraps around different internal organs, including the lungs, heart, and stomach).
- The outer layer(it forms a sac around the inner layer).
There is a very little trace of fluid between the two layers so that the organs can move easily.
The mesothelium has different varieties of names, depending on where it is located in the body. The mesothelium that protects, safeguard and cushions the lungs is called the pleura. The outer layer that lines the inside wall of the chest is called the parietal pleura.
The pleura of the lungs
The mesothelium that wraps the abdominal organs and lines the walls of the abdomen and pelvis is called the peritoneum. The inner layer is called the visceral peritoneum. It covers and supports most of the internal abdominal organs. The outer layer is called the parietal peritoneum and it lines the walls of the pelvis and abdomen.

The mesothelium is made up of mesothelial cells. Sometimes these cells change and they don’t grow and behave normally and hence these may lead to non-cancerous tumours, such as fibrous tumour of the pleura and multicystic mesothelioma but in some cases, changes to mesothelial cells can cause malignant mesothelioma.
